Industrial Design Portfolio
You no longer have to choose between pancakes and waffles. Have both. This innovative design features stay-cool handles, comes apart easily for the dishwasher, and works on a variety of cooking surfaces.
Humboldt EcocloneTM Ultrasonic Fog Cloning System
This revolutionary aeroponic plant propagation system uses ultrasonic fog technology to create a market-disruptive plant cloning device. Disruptive because the design solved all the problems associated with traditional plant cloners, while only using a third of the energy, and half of the water.
Nuclear Radiation Detector
Serving the Homeland Security and Defense sectors, this new device utilizes crystal technology to scan and detect trace levels of radiation and protect against terrorist threats.
Revision Pilates Table
Designed for the home, this compact workout platform offers a full range of pilates exercises and folds away for easy storage.
Nutritional and Responsibility Trackers
An Apple a Day helps parents set goals that put their kids on track with good nutrition, regular exercise and personal responsibility.
Inspired by an egg timer, this whimsical design for a calorie counter is a simple way to keep one's diet on course without the need for batteries or apps.
GymValet® Bottle and Towel Holder
A holder for sanitizing spray bottles and towels, the GymValet attaches directly to all strength training and cardio equipment without any tools.
The Product Design Process
The first stage for creating a new product, after researching competitive designs that already exist, is to create a series of 2D drawings that explore possible features, colors and methods for manufacture. Next, we will create a 3D model to uncover design strengths and weaknesses. Often a simple, non-functioning 'sight model' can be used to generate interest from investors or be photographed for promotional marketing. Design details are further refined after this stage to produce a final product ready for manufacturing.
Concept sketching to explore a variety of design possiblities.
Our product design workflow centers around 3D digital models that can be easily modified and tested to validate design decisions. These models are useful for creating photo-realistic renderings and working prototypes. Finally, we will prepare a set of control drawings that describe the manufacturing details necessary for successful molding and assembly.
3D digital models are created using Solidworks.
Prototypes are tested to find problems and make improvements.
Ergonomics discovers and applies information about human behavior, abilities, and limitations. The first step in designing a good product is to consider the user. Process, Materials, and Measurements - a reference book for industrial designers - is a collaboration by the faculty at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Carla Blackman, principal at Design Interface, authored the chapter on Ergonomics. She has taught the subject for over 30 years at CIA.
