The Product Design Process
The first stage for creating a new product, after researching competitive designs that already exist, is to create a series of 2D drawings that explore possible features, colors and methods for manufacture. Next, we will create a 3D model to uncover design strengths and weaknesses. Often a simple, non-functioning 'sight model' can be used to generate interest from investors or be photographed for promotional marketing. Design details are further refined after this stage to produce a final product ready for manufacturing.

Our product design work flow centers around 3D digital models that can be easily modified and tested to validate design decisions. These models are useful for creating photo-realistic renderings and working prototypes. Finally, we will prepare a set of control drawings that describe the manufacturing details necessary for successful molding and assembly.

Process, Materials, and Measurements - a reference book for industrial designers - is a collaboration by the faculty at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Carla Blackman, principal at Design Interface, authored the chapter on Ergonomics. She has taught the subject for over 30 years at CIA.
