DI + Cleveland Institute of Art Faculty Show 2021

DI + Cleveland Institute of Art Faculty Show 2021

We are delighted to be part of the Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA) Faculty Exhibition 2021. Two pieces are in this year’s show: SoleStretch medical stretching device and Greetings from Cleveland: On-location sketches from 2015-2021.

SoleStretch was designed by the team at Design Interface Inc. led by Adrian Slattery. It alleviates heel and foot pain, along with a message feature that relieves pain in IT bands, quads and hamstrings. Designed to come apart in two pieces for packing, also with a hook for easy hanging. Find it at solestretch.com.

Greetings from Cleveland features sketches by Carla Blackman from Urban Sketchers Cleveland monthly outings spanning several years. Carla leads this sketch group, part of the world-wide Urban Sketchers group. The artwork is presented in an accordion style fold-out as Greetings from Cleveland postcards. For future sketch events visit: http://urbansketchers-cleveland.blogspot.com.

The Design Interface Inc. Company Logo Then And Now. How It Evolved.

The Design Interface Inc. Company Logo Then And Now. How It Evolved.

Our founder, Carla Blackman, started the design agency in 1984 (first called Design Focus). In 1986, we incorporated and launched Design Interface Inc. with a new logo. Our brand emphasized DESIGN with block letters in a font called Impact to showcase our core competency.

The block under DESIGN held the words “Interface Inc.” and it gave the logo some dimension. The trending colors at the time were salmon pink and light blue (who knew we would cringe at this 35 years later).

In 1992, as we moved to our current location, an updated logo was in order. The word DESIGN stayed dominant, still in pink, adding a solid blue box, with reversed type “Interface Inc.” in Futura Condensed. Bars were added below the block to suggest movement.

To make it more web friendly, we updated our logo again in 2002 making some color adjustments. We kept the blue color, but only used it to outline the word DESIGN. The big change took place with the block and lines that became dark gray.

Finally in 2019, the DI logo was enclosed in a black circle allowing the graphics to pop. We reversed out the word DESIGN and lightened the gray block and line pattern making it easier to use in social media. This is the logo we currently use and love…for now.

Wayback Wednesday: GE Roadway Streetlights

Wayback Wednesday: GE Roadway Streetlights

Back in 2010 we had the opportunity to update the design of GE’s roadway streetlights that appear along our highways. They wanted to explore ideas for a sleek exterior housing to contain the electronics and opticals already in place. Using our 3D visualization software (Solidworks) we came back with several possibilities for them to consider. The design had to  be flexible enough to accommodate from 1 to 4 light modules which would essentially create four available sizes. Also important was to use fins for heat dissipation and channeling snow or rain away from the top. The streetlight that was ultimately offered can be seen today all over Cleveland’s highways and some parking lots as well.

It’s always neat to look up and see the result of our efforts lighting the way.

Design Interface Gets a New Cutting Machine

Design Interface Gets a New Cutting Machine

We just added a new cutting machine to our design family. The Cricut Maker®!

With our new machine we are able to cut, score and create 2D and 3D projects in half the time it would of taken to do the cutting and scoring manually. I was able to take an illustrator svg. file and upload into the Design Space®, the application for Cricket Maker, and cut and score a box for one of our clients within minutes.

Cricut Maker quickly and accurately cuts over 300 different materials, from the most delicate paper and fabric to the tough stuff like matboard, leather, and basswood. It also offers a wide range of tools for cutting, scoring, writing, and adding decorative effects. You can take on virtually any project you can imagine. Check out this video that gives a overview of what is possible. https://cricut.com/en_us/cricut-maker.

Graphic Communication for Installation Guides

Graphic Communication for Installation Guides

At Design Interface Inc. we are experienced in product AND graphic design. That expertise led us to a rebranding project of product sheets and installation guides for a Fortune 500 client. We are putting the finishing touches on a 220+ piece collateral program. Working in SolidWorks, InDesign, Illustrator and KeyShot, we are able to position the product, hands and tools to create a storyboard for the installer. Our value added is that we can communicate the best way to install the product.

We used these same techniques on the Information-For-Use (IFU) guide for the basketball training harness shown. Let us help solve your communication challenges, contact Design Interface today.

Introducing the SoleStretch

Introducing the SoleStretch

Over the last year we have been helping to design a new medical device for those suffering from Plantar Fasciitis. It’s inventor, Bill Flickinger, a physiologist by training, calls it the SoleStretch and features a unique design that provides a proper stretch that is controlled, pain-free and non-weight bearing. All exercises are performed while seated which enables the leg and foot muscles to fully relax. The 2-piece handle comes apart for additional exercises and portability. Creativity Crisis—How To Be Creative On Demand

Creativity Crisis—How To Be Creative On Demand

You are given a new project to work on and it happens, you sit there, staring blankly, and waiting for inspiration to strike. How can this be your a creative person? But even a creative person can’t just turn creativity on and off like a light switch.

Lost mojo is something that affects all of us, at least some of the time. Here are some steps on how to switch on the creative magic when you genuinely need to.

1. Step away from the problem. It helps to step away and give your brain a little time to process things. The chances are that when you return, fresh ideas will come.

2. Make a playlist. Another way to jolt your brain into being more creative is to change up the sounds you’re listening to. Listening to certain bands and albums can help create a clear switch in your mind when you need to be creative.

3. Make a mess. Sometimes your creativity can be held back because you’re trying to devise a refined, finished product at the start, rather than being looser and freer with your ideas. Experiment first, get a huge piece of paper, sketch out anything that comes to you no matter how ridiculous it is put it on paper, and just make a mess.

4. Employ mindfulness. If you’re struggling to be creative, it could be because you’re in the wrong state of mind. So do something about it. Taking the time to be mindful before taking on a creative task or project. Sometimes totally removing yourself from all those thoughts in your head is a helpful way to see the bigger picture.

5. Make things quickly. Having too much time to work on a project can sometimes hold you back. Conversely, putting time restrictions in place can be a great way to unblock your flow.

6. Recreate scenarios. Recreate scenarios where creativity has struck before. Inspiration often comes from something you saw while traveling or just walking outdoors. Try to close your eyes and immerse yourself in your favorite playlist. It can work like magic.

7. Develop a ritual. One of the most effective ways to get your creative juices flowing is to create a ritual of things you do every time you start a new project. Whatever that process consists of; it’ll be so much better than just staring at the walls, waiting for inspiration to strike.

Book Cover Design + Page Design

Book Cover Design + Page Design

Recently we had the pleasure of designing a new book with printed cover and inside pages, Mind IC: Notes on Intellectual Capital Management by Bill Elkington. The cover features Detroit Industry by Diego Rivera, a mural from Detroit Institute of Arts as its flagship image. For the logotype we used Bank Gothic which reflects Bill’s business intent with the book, the inside pages are set in Caslon Pro, an easy-to-read font. We also designed the companion website to go with his new consulting business and to help promote the book.
