One-Click AI to Retouch Vintage Photos
The wonder of Artificial Intelligence seems to be a hot topic these days, from driving electric cars to tracking buying habits. However, the use of AI in graphic design software is really taking off and promises remarkable results that otherwise would be very difficult to achieve. For example, retouching old photos often requires hours of tedious work to remove scratches, sharpen blurry images, and upscale low resolution images. An app called Remini can do all this and more with a single click and allows up to 5 conversions a day for free. The example above of an old photograph shows how the mottled skin was instantly smoothed and even details that were not in the original, such as individual hairs, were intelligently added. The software seems to do a better job with organic shapes such as faces and not so well with text.

Will The Demand For Graphic Designers Diminish In The Near Future?
There’s an obstacle on the horizon. Like almost every other industry, design has been infiltrated by artificial intelligence. Are the robots taking over our designers, too? Will graphic design even be a field in a few years?
As I read this article I was glad to find out that Graphic Design, by human designers, provides a creative visual experience that enhances every brand, whether it’s looking at websites, packaging, signs, or even a book. However, AI has its place in graphic design, and AI-powered design tools and software can be an advantage to designers in search of inspiration.
One thing AI cannot yet provide, and the human designer can, is the human touch when it comes to the understanding of the personality behind a brand. That doesn’t mean that things won’t continue to change and AI design shouldn’t be ignored, because it will become the way of the future. It is important to keep up with new trends and technology. In short, the ability to adapt is key to survival. And that’s what will keep you in high demand.

The Psychology of Color in Web Design
Today so many companies rely on the internet and their website to draw in new clients or create more sales. With that being said, I thought this article published in Graphic Arts Today about, “The Psychology of Color in Web Design,” would be a good conversation starter for many businesses when they are either creating a new website or revising an existing one.
Because web design needs to have an influence over people’s behavior, more and more designers have been looking to the psychology of color to help them create websites. Color can play on cultural references to suggest trust, urgency, or mystery to the target audience. It’s important to understand that the psychology of color plays a big role in persuasion. Color has the power to improve conversions by grabbing customers’ attention and triggering the right emotions for sales, and can often define the public’s perception of your brand and what you stand for. Using the right colors can help put your customers in the frame of mind that compels them to take action.
Topics discussed in the article are: Color and Conversions, Contrast and Brightness, Case Studies on the Psychology of Color, and 10 Colors from the Internet Marketer’s Perception.
It’s a great read and will get you thinking about how color influences you not only on the web, but in your everyday life.

Patents a Plenty
According to Wikipedia, “A patent is a type of intellectual property that gives its owner the legal right to exclude others from making, using, or selling an invention for a limited period of years, in exchange for publishing an enabling public disclosure of the invention.”
Very often a new product design will yield a number of new improvements that are worth protecting with a patent. When the innovation relates to better functionality, then a utility patent is assigned. Other times a product’s appearance will change which calls for a design patent. Over the years the Industrial Designers at Design Interface have been named in over 18 patents as we strive to make better products for our clients. They cover a wide range of fields from exercise to healthcare – a few are listed below:
- Compression garment having enhanced strap configuration
- Mounting arm for a post top roadway light
- Wound-care apparatus and method for cleansing, desloughing, and debriding wounds
- Flexible LED lighting strips
- Bottle and towel holder for exercise equipment
- Portable, reusable, and disposable intermittent pneumatic compression system
- Systems and methods for making a hybrid waffle-pancake

It alleviates heel and foot pain, along with a message feature that relieves pain in IT bands, quads and hamstrings. Designed to come apart in two pieces for packing, also with a hook for easy hanging. Find it at solestretch.com.
Greetings from Cleveland features sketches by Carla Blackman from Urban Sketchers Cleveland monthly outings spanning several years. Carla leads this sketch group, part of the world-wide Urban Sketchers group. The artwork is presented in an accordion style fold-out as Greetings from Cleveland postcards. The Design Interface Inc. Company Logo Then And Now. How It Evolved.
Our founder, Carla Blackman, started the design agency in 1984 (first called Design Focus). In 1986, we incorporated and launched Design Interface Inc. with a new logo. Our brand emphasized DESIGN with block letters in a font called Impact to showcase our core competency.
The block under DESIGN held the words “Interface Inc.” and it gave the logo some dimension. The trending colors at the time were salmon pink and light blue (who knew we would cringe at this 35 years later).
In 1992, as we moved to our current location, an updated logo was in order. The word DESIGN stayed dominant, still in pink, adding a solid blue box, with reversed type “Interface Inc.” in Futura Condensed. Bars were added below the block to suggest movement.
To make it more web friendly, we updated our logo again in 2002 making some color adjustments. We kept the blue color, but only used it to outline the word DESIGN. The big change took place with the block and lines that became dark gray.
Finally in 2019, the DI logo was enclosed in a black circle allowing the graphics to pop. We reversed out the word DESIGN and lightened the gray block and line pattern making it easier to use in social media. This is the logo we currently use and love…for now.

Wayback Wednesday: GE Roadway Streetlights
Back in 2010 we had the opportunity to update the design of GE’s roadway streetlights that appear along our highways. They wanted to explore ideas for a sleek exterior housing to contain the electronics and opticals already in place. Using our 3D visualization software (Solidworks) we came back with several possibilities for them to consider. The design had to be flexible enough to accommodate from 1 to 4 light modules which would essentially create four available sizes. Also important was to use fins for heat dissipation and channeling snow or rain away from the top. The streetlight that was ultimately offered can be seen today all over Cleveland’s highways and some parking lots as well.
It’s always neat to look up and see the result of our efforts lighting the way.

Design Interface Gets a New Cutting Machine
We just added a new cutting machine to our design family. The Cricut Maker®!
With our new machine we are able to cut, score and create 2D and 3D projects in half the time it would of taken to do the cutting and scoring manually. I was able to take an illustrator svg. file and upload into the Design Space®, the application for Cricket Maker, and cut and score a box for one of our clients within minutes.
Cricut Maker quickly and accurately cuts over 300 different materials, from the most delicate paper and fabric to the tough stuff like matboard, leather, and basswood. It also offers a wide range of tools for cutting, scoring, writing, and adding decorative effects. You can take on virtually any project you can imagine. Check out this video that gives a overview of what is possible. https://cricut.com/en_us/cricut-maker.
